Punctuality in attendance is expected of the employees in any organization. Unfailing observance of work discipline is something that is not tolerated. Almost every company has a policy for attendance to keep a check on the punctuality quotient of the employees. They deduct a certain amount from their salary for late reporting. This step is considered as a standard in many companies. However, it has a drawback. Employees raise the question that if an amount is deducted for late coming, overtime should as well be given for staying late.

But nonetheless, a letter is sent to the late comers as circulars to maintain office timings. Below is a sample letter to give a better idea on the same.

One of the most challenging aspects of running an organization is the task of ‘employee engagement’. The Human Resource Department is the driving force that keeps it on the go. HR does not face much of a problem when the company runs in good days. The big blow comes during the time of recession.

Recessions are normally dreaded times when the global market remains at question. Company ceases to grow which directly affect the employees. In simpler words, no more increments and no more promotions. It is a phase where employees feel demotivated and challenges the HR management to come up with effective strategies to pass the tough phase.

Importance of employee engagement

Most importantly, because it directly benefits the company. Profitability and engagement go hand in hand. The more the competition, the more is the outcome. Plus employees to need financial growth to sustain in this tough world. But when recession knocks at the door, the engagement level suffers questioning the sustainability of the company in future.

A few of the characteristics include passion for work, emotionally mature, affect positive environment, customer satisfaction, personal initiative, job involvement, relationship building, embrace change, critical thinking, self-development, creativity, trustworthy and so on.

Impact of unemployment

There has been a global unemployment session going on it the present. Jobs are scarce and layoffs are everywhere. There is a feeling of insecurity in the market, companies are being downsized and there is this constant fear of permanent job loss.

Feeling Good Matters in the Workplace, a 2006 Gallup study says that there are usually three types of employees in an organization:

  • 28% include the engaged employees. This section normally works with the right zeal and potential with innovations to run the company and bring it to the top.
  • 54% include the non engaged employees or the checked out. They are termed as sleepwalkers. They to work for the company but does not really care about the outcome. They only believe in meeting deadlines and getting their work done.
  • The rest 18% form the actively disengaged lot. They seem to be unsatisfied and remain busy complaining about their grumpy work life. Nothing makes them happy. They keep on undermining engaged coworkers accomplishments.

However, the last decade has seen a certain growth in the engaged employee’s graph. It rose from 26 to 30 percent and actively disengaged employees rose from 15 to 20 percent.

Tips to engage employees in recession

Employ management/leadership practices

Managers and supervisors should understand the importance of their role and their influence on the employees. The flow of communication should never break otherwise it is bound to break employee expectations and affect performance report.

HR may adopt strategies like at times of severe recession when budgets do not allow for training off-site, they must be able to take advantage of employees’ interests and engage them for work.

Challenge employees

One of the most experimented human psychologies is that people tend to give their best if they are scaled or marked. They do everything they can to prove their potentials. Employ this strategy during time of recessions. Challenge employees with different task and they will automatically achieve more than normal. But do not forget to guide and mentor them.

Converse with employees

Listen to their emotional side. Maintain the communication bridge. Let them share their insights. Clear their doubts. This is because no matter how professional you tend to be, if any personal issue stings, you will never be able to give your cent percent. Therefore ease their mind with a healthy employee-employer relationship.

Arrange get to gather

Floor activities and events create short term good memories that immensely aid in developed work potential. HR can organize get to gather where employees can show their hidden talent and be rewarded. Loyalty and success are two entities in any organization that cannot be separated from each other. As they say it, losing loyal employees is clearly an expensive business. When loyalty degrades, turnover is directly affected. Hence if you take the right effort and measures from the very beginning, you can take your company to a new height. HR must be able to come up with new ideas and put some extra effort from time to time to motivate the employees. Loyal employees bring laurels as they are the productive entity of a corporation. Satisfied employees do not hesitate to go the extra mile help the organization improve by sharing expertise, resolving conflicts and suggesting improvements.

1. Support them with their career objective:

Come up with ideas to help employees cultivate commitment. Provide them with opportunities for their development and show them a clear career path. It generally includes all the probable ways to achieve success and train them how to proceed with it. Come up with ideas to enhance their professional skills from time to time. You being a HR, coach your managers to help inspire their teams to share their skills and allow growth. This way your employees will always remain loyal.

2. Let the hiring process be long:

Yes! The hiring process is time consuming. But the more time you take to scrutiny, the more you can add to your advantage. This is because the process pays off when you land on the right person. Keep in mind that well-matched employees are usually the loyal ones. Conduct a personality screening process. Ask the candidate to complete a project or share thoughts on a certain issue and he/she will proceed with it; the disaster management plans in mind. Check if they are a perfect fit to your organization work culture.

3. Nurture relationships: 

The better your relationship is with your employee, the better are the chances of keeping him/her loyal to your organization. Yes, there is always the thin line and you need not be best buddies. Create a workplace culture where real relationships are valued instead. Conduct orientation programs for new employees wherein you may include activities such as team building, corporate coaching, organizing event etc. to help them get familiar with one another. Also give out best employee and related awards to motive them to work harder.

4. Have an open perspective

You must have an open mind with a better perspective to judge the activities of your employees. Understand your company’s requirements and help fellow employees improve accordingly. Come up with new strategies from time to time. Remove fear of termination and guide them in case of mistrust and confusion. Better the loyalty, better is the productively.

5. Loyalty is also mixed with marketability

Provide employees with regular opportunities to help them enhance their professional skills. The trick applied in most organization is, they make their employees aware that they can leave whenever they want. They do not worry about investing too much in work force. These way employees are more likely to stay and remain loyal to the company.

The bottom line to make employees loyal to any company is trust. Without it, you will cease to function. Follow the three step regime: liberal management, better creativity and higher employee satisfaction.

Employee attitude is a major issue to pay concern in almost every organization. The fact is nobody is every perfect and everyone has the right to make mistakes and so does employees. They cannot remain in a same ‘happy to go lucky’ mood every day. He may not be bad or wrong, but situations might force him to react in such a way. You being the HR must be able to understand such situations and react in the most sensible manner.

Here are a few tips to help you react in the most appropriate manner at times when an employee throw tantrums or misbehaves.

1. Adopt one to one interaction session for a comforting personal approach.

2. Try to get to the core of the problem. Avoid interactions with others and help them cope up with their problem.

3. Keep an eye on the employee. Follow him in the office. Keep track of how he interacts with others an take feedback from his friends.

4. Give out questionnaires to employees upon joining that will help you analyze their positive/negative attitude towards the company or any department in specific.

5. Division of the support group is important. Coordinate with the CSR and IR members to come up with better plans to deal with employee attitude issue.

6. Consider every possible aspect to help you understand the basic underlying issue.

7. Conduct perspective building training programme once in a while to help employees understand the concept of teamwork and create a good working environment.

8. Understand the problem and prepare a database based on the key influencers and trouble creators in the organization.

9. Try to build a professional attitude and a very good and calm work culture. Make sure that employees do not mix their personal lives with professional outlook.

10. Make them understand the work culture/ethics of your company. Use training, treatment or therapy to handle the hard nuts.

11. Conduct programs where every individual help every other individual understand why he reacts in a particular way. This way work relationships get stronger.

12. As a last resort, if you feel that a certain employee’s attitude have reached rock bottom, terminate him on the basis of his misconduct or behavior.
