Default Concerns about Assistant Trainer

Hi All:

I am a Training Manager and I've hired an Assistant Trainer for me recently.
She has worked for 6 months as a Vendor Trainer before. She’s doing good though she needs to hone her skills as a Trainer and an Assistant still. She seems to have a desire to learn and be trained.

However, she happens to repeat her mistakes everytime. Inspite of instructing and guiding she continues to err in almost every assigned task - be it marking the training attendance for the running batches or be it preparing the report cards for the training evaluation. Also, she has been late for work most of the times.

She was going through some difficult phase in her life wherein I've been extremely co-operative and supportive of her and she too feels the same. However, the management never liked her much. They were sceptical about her. During the selection process I didn't have a choice either since the compensation offered by my firm is less. And they are sure about it.

She by now is very much acquainted with the company and it's employees.
Firing her won't be a wise act. I feel it will be loss of time and energy spend on training her till this extent.

Further, I feel that I've displayed my patience more than enough and now things are getting on my nerves.

Please suggest how should I handle the situation.

Thanks.

Regards,
Mehrab

Dear Mehrab,

I think what you have is not a problem but a challenge.

I personally will advice you to let her be for a while and give her some space to learn and do what she likes. With her behavior you will be able to gauge if she has been the right selection.

I handle a lot of vendor trainers myself; they come from a different psyche as opposed to a full time employee. Allow her to learn what she wants to but do not discuss her personal life at work at all. Everyone has difficult phases in life but they are meant to be left at home and should not affect their work life for such a long time.

I'd say keep a distance from her personal life involvement to not be dragged in to unwanted situations.

Hope I've managed to understand your problem well.

Regards,
Bruncha
