Lightbulb Using Laughter to Improve the Workplace

Stress and burnout are slowly becoming a household name in many workplaces, which is why companies are looking for ways to keep their employees happy, healthy, and productive. Back then, a lot of organizations tend to look down on laughter during work, seeing it as a mere distraction. However, keeping laughter and humor away from the workplace in the name of “no pain, no gain” has actually become counter-productive.

Laughter is found out to be an integral part of physical well-being. Scientific studies show that laughing 200 times can burn off the same amount of calories as 10 minutes on a rowing machine. It also drops the blood pressure, oxygenates the blood, increase energy level, relaxes muscles, improves the immune system, and works out all major internal organs.

Here are what psychologists suggest where to incorporate humor into the workplace.

When there is a no-win situation – Humor is needed there a job is expected to be done but your employees, or the organization, do not have the necessary resources in terms of time, money, policies, or people. Other such situations include having to serve a difficult or overly demanding client or boss, or having to enforce unpopular rules and regulations.

When there are unpredictable causes of stress – These can appear as situations that regularly but unpredictably happen that adversely affect stress, workloads, or scheduling. It can also be decisions made at other departments of the company that affect the employees’ job.
